Growing up with Magic

It wasnt a phase.

He’ll get over it

Starting from a magic kit given to me at Christmas, my beginnings with my favorite art form in the whole entire world began just like any other magician. It was a fascination i couldn’t shake nor wanted to. At school I was called “Magic Boy,” but I didn’t mind. I was famous. Magic tricks i learned from a little kit have given me more than my parents could ask for; Confidence in myself, learned what real practice and persistence meant, and it opened up a whole new world of opportunities. Showing what seems now the most basic magic tricks to some of my simple minded friends made me feel powerful. Not because I had power over them but because I had the power to make them laugh and smile. Magic is so much more than just a prop, its the feeling of wonder just sitting in your pocket. All this at the age of 10.

When It Became Serious, They knew.

My first magic show was my cousins birthday party at the age of 12. I was so excited i forgot half my props at home and I didn’t know what to do. I know I did the best i could with what I had, and even now I know how valuable that lesson is. When my parents asked if i still wanted to do the show, and i confidently said yes, they were just as surprised as I was. The level of gumption I had felt like it came out of nowhere. As I waited for the crowd to settle my uncle came up to introduce me. I was giddy with delight that he’d do that for me. It felt like a real show. Those 2 years of practice came up to this moment. All those magicians Ive seen on Tv ran through my mind. Idolizing my heroes, thinking “What would David Copperfield do?” I went on and started with making balls appear and disappear. Thereafter a card trick in which i attempted to find a card. I remember the audience applauding and cheering for me. The whole show only last about 10 minutes, but It like forever for me. I knew I had a lot of work to do, and the encouragement my parents gave me was enough inspiration to keep the magic going.

Practice Practice Practice

the Castle in the sky

After that show first show, I tried to find out as much information as I could about anything and everything in Magic. One place kept coming up in my research at my local library, The Magic Castle. I went to my local magic shop to ask about it and they were thrilled to tell me all about it. The most important bit if information was that the Magic Castle had a junior magicians program where the hone young wizards to be the greatest they can be. The owner of the magic shop mentioned they had a magic club that met every Friday to practice to audition for the magic castle junior magicians program. I immediately jumped on the opportunity to sign up to the magic club. I wanted to be in that program so bad, and Ive just heard about it. I learned right away that it wasnt going to be easy. I settled on a form called dove magic. A magician in tails produces white beautiful doves from his bare hands. Every great magician in Las Vegas was doing it, why couldn’t a 12 year old with huge ambition?

THE ACT

It took 2 years after that day to perfect my act. My parents were my biggest motivators, and I have to say, I couldnt have dont it without them. Every Friday they’ve leave me to practice with the rest of the group at the magic club to talk over technique and performance styles. The Phantom of the Opera always appealed to me so i base my act off of him. Suave and mysterious was what I was going for at the age of 14. The tall dark and handsome magician type. See for yourself above to see how turned out. Ill give you a hint, Ive been a member of the magic castle since I was 14.
